Orb — Motivation Quotes
An iOS app that turns 2 500 years of stoic philosophy into a 30-second daily ritual — with widgets that put the wisdom on your home screen.
What Orb does
“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”
Orb is an iOS app that puts stoic philosophy in your pocket. Every day, you complete a 30-second ritual: a breath, an intention, a quote. The quote is hand-picked from Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, Epictetus and other stoic voices, and is matched to what you’re actually feeling that morning. A beautiful widget then keeps the line on your home screen until tomorrow.
The promise is small and concrete: a one-minute habit that, over weeks, rewires how you react to stress, anxiety, and the small daily things you can’t control.
Why it exists
Most “motivation” apps push generic affirmations that feel like fortune cookies — pleasant for ten seconds, forgotten by the time you put the phone down. The stoics solved this 2 000 years ago: short, sharp ideas you can carry with you all day. The problem is access. Their books are dense, scattered, and inconvenient on a Tuesday morning.
Orb closes that gap. It distils a personal stoic library into 30 seconds a day, plus an ambient reminder on your lock screen. The result is a tool, not a content firehose.
How it works
- Pick an intention. Each morning, choose what you want to work on — calm, focus, discipline, courage, gratitude. The app tracks what resonates.
- Breathe. A brief breathing animation grounds the ritual. No timer pressure, no streak shame.
- Receive your quote. A philosopher’s line, surfaced just for today, with a tap-through to the source and the surrounding context.
- Carry it on your home screen. Pin the quote as a widget on home or lock screen, in the size and style you like.
- Save and share. Build a personal library of lines that hit. Export to any image background to share with a friend who needs it.
Key benefits
- Build emotional resilience, daily. Stoic philosophy is a 2 500-year-old training program for the mind. Orb makes the program practical.
- Reduce reactive anxiety. The app keeps showing you the line between what you control and what you don’t — until the distinction becomes second nature.
- One minute, not one hour. Designed around real mornings. No journaling pressure, no long-form reading, no notification spam.
- Ambient, not addictive. The widget does most of the work — once it’s set up, you read the quote in passing, not by opening another app.
- Save the lines that move you. Your saved collection becomes a personal compass over time.
Curated collections
Beyond the daily quote, Orb organises thematic deep-dives:
- Anxiety — the stoic approach to worry, expectation, and uncertainty.
- Discipline — short reflections on consistency, effort, and the long game.
- Focus — what to do when the mind scatters.
- Control — the dichotomy at the heart of the philosophy.
- More themes added with each release.
The widgets
This is where Orb really earns its place on the home screen:
- Small, medium, and large widget sizes.
- Multiple visual styles — minimal type-only, illustrated, monochrome, accent-coloured.
- iOS lock-screen widgets so the quote greets you before you unlock.
- Refreshes in tune with the daily ritual — never stale.

Under the hood
A short technical note, since this is also a portfolio piece:
- React Native + Expo for the core app, written entirely in TypeScript.
- NativeWind brings a utility-first styling model on top of React Native — fast iteration, consistent design tokens, easy theming for light and dark.
- iOS Widgets built natively with WidgetKit so they feel like first-party iOS, not a React surface squeezed into a widget shell.
- RevenueCat powers the subscription layer — weekly/monthly/yearly plans, free trial, restore-purchase, cross-device entitlement.
- Content as JSON. The quote library, themes, and metadata ship as static JSON bundled with the app — no backend, no network dependency for the daily ritual. Saved quotes and user state live in local device storage. Keeps the app fast, offline-capable, and free of server costs.
- Built and shipped solo: design, code, App Store screenshots, copy, and ASO. End-to-end ownership.
What’s next
- Apple Watch face complications so the daily line lives on your wrist.
- Spoken-quote mode for hands-free mornings.
- Android version (the React Native foundation makes this a port, not a rewrite).
- Reflection prompts to pair with each quote — optional, opt-in, never streak-based.
